Fast Facts on Lord of the Rings Online
Compiled by Max Steele
Every MMO has its quirks and special features, and no one reads the manual. So here’s a running-speed guide to things you should know about LOTRO.
It’s all the answers to the questions you would ask in /Advice, but now don’t need to!
The User Interface
- Hit N to turn floaty names on or off. Floaty names can cause a lot of lag and line of sight problems in towns, so you’ll toggle this plenty.
- Hit CTRL \ to modify the UI.
- Hit F12 to remove the UI.
Graphics Options
- You can turn off your hat, cape, and shoes in Options – Advanced Graphics. Don’t turn off your shoes unless you’re a hobbit. Please.
- You can turn off 3D portraits to increase your frame rate in Options – Advanced Graphics.
- If you experience a lot of lag or "hitching" in cities, there’s a slider under Option – Advanced Graphics that will let you decrease the graphics quality when in a crowd.
Fellowships
- If you’re in a Fellowship, clicking the little bullseye next to your fellows’ names will target their target. Helping your fellows is considered good form, what.
- If you’re in a Fellowship and a big bullseye appears in the middle of your screen, clicking it will bring up the Fellowship Maneuvers diamond. So click it!
- When that red, blue, yellow, and orange diamond appears on your screen, you can use a Fellowship Maneuver (sometimes archaically called a "conjunction"). It matters what color you pick! Your Fellowship may have a plan for these. If in doubt, hit Yellow or Red.
Combat Options
- In the Options – Combat menu, you should "Enable Skill Target Forwarding". Then if you use a heal or buff while targeting an enemy, it will automatically benefit whomever the enemy is targeting. Very helpful for your pet or tank (or pet tank).
- In the Options-Combat menu, you should activate a "Directional Selection Indicator" that will give you a dotted line towards your target. Very helpful when spamming the DEL key to find resource nodes.
Resources and Crafting
- Scholars have nodes – they are urns and vases in Ruins. Don’t pass these out of ignorance for ten levels like…someone I know…did.
- Hit DEL to find the nearest node. This is critical if you’re a Scholar camping Ruins waiting for Scholar nodes (urns and so on) to spawn.
PvP
- When you hit level 10, you can play as a Monster in PvP. Find a Fell Scrying Pool (they’re red, and there’s one in Bree and Thorin’s Hall).
- You can get to any Monster you make from any of your characters of at least level 10 or higher. You don’t need to use the same character you first went to the Pool with, nor do the Monsters "synch" with the Characters.
RP
- "Mae govannen" means well met in the Elf-tongue.
- All the Servers are RP according to Turbine. Take that for what it’s worth.
- Landroval is where the Beta players who like to RP went to play. It's the "unofficial" RP server.
- You can find a kinship in our Kinship Listing.
Quests
- If you’re looking for Avorthal in Tham Gelair, you won’t find him, but if you look for the body of a dead goblin you’ll be able to advance the quest line.
- If you need to find "The Yellow Tree", take the road southeast out of Saddle. Don’t waste your time looking in the woods, because it’s right on the road.
- If you need to find the Wardspire, it’s in north-east corner of Ered Luin.
- If you need to find Thrasi’s Lodge, it’s south-west of the Y intersection past Druillond.
